Ring Aspect Ratio Calculator:

Aspect ratios are calculated by dividing the internal diameter of the ring by the thickness of the wire

For most (all?) chain maille projects, the aspect ratio is vital

Too big, and the weave is too loose. Too small and you can create a chain that doesn't bend!

This may seem like an obvious thing to say, but always use the same units in all boxes. i.e. use all inches (decimals - so half an inch is 0.5) or MM

Inches to MM and back:

We know there are hundreds of these out there, but thought we should add this for completeness

Especially as we know so many other places buy their rings in from America or Canada.

We have also noticed that most American chain maille patterns are in inches, so this should help

When converting inches to MM, please fill in the three boxes - the first is the whole number, the other two are the top and bottom parts of the fraction

Converting MM to Inches is somewhat more challenging:

We could do a straight conversion, giving you a decimal inch for the MM value. However, if you went to any chain maille ring supplier or engineering shop and asked for ring with an internal diameter of 0.2188", you might receive some puxxled looks.

So we did a little more work - just for you

In the fields below, enter your number of millimeters. You can even enter a fraction of a MM! You then, from the drop down box, choose 8, 16, 32 or 64 as your denominator (bottom number)

Once you click the "Convert" button, your conversion gives you an answer in whole inches and the numerator (top number) as close to your MM size as we can get. In the rounding box below, you will see how close to being 100% accurate it is

One other thing to note: If your numerator (top number) is an even number, reduce the size of your denominator and click convert again. This is because the fraction can be simplified (you might see 8/32 in the answer, but this can be simplified to 1/4")
